A common question that many people ask when they are considering Invisalign in Granby, CT is whether or not the clear aligners cause pain.  Even though Invisalign isn’t completely free from discomfort, it is not as intense as regular braces. But how much does it hurt? Is the discomfort worth it in order to have a straightened smile? Continue reading to learn more about what you can expect from Invisalign and what you can do to alleviate any pain that you may feel from it.

How Much Does Invisalign Hurt?

Invisalign moves your teeth more gradually and with less pressure than regular braces, so in comparison you are less likely to feel as much pain. However, any type of movement of the teeth is going to cause at least some discomfort and soreness. There are several different sources of discomfort that you could experience with clear aligners. One is from the pressure against the teeth and the other is from the aligners rubbing against the soft tissue in your mouth.

The soreness that you will feel from aligners is going to be more pronounced for the first few days after putting in a fresh set of aligners, but it will wane over time as your teeth adjust into their new places. Most people who have Invisalign don’t describe this sensation as pain. For most, it is discomfort or soreness.

It is also possible for you to experience some sensitivity to your gums and the inside of your lips as a result of the edges of your aligners. However, over time you will develop the callouses you need to prevent irritation. By the time you get your second set of aligners, your mouth should be fully adjusted and you’re unlikely to experience any irritation.

What Can I Do to Relieve Discomfort from Invisalign?

Most people are able to ride out any discomfort that they feel for the first few days after getting a new set of aligners. But if you feel the need to suppress soreness or pain, over-the-counter pain killers are a good place to start. If your pain is a result of the aligners pushing against your teeth, using a pain killer that reduces inflammation is more effective.

If the edges of your aligners are too sharp and causing you pain, call your dentist. They will be able to smooth them out so you can have a more comfortable Invisalign experience.

Even though Invisalign isn’t necessarily the most comfortable experience in the world, it causes much less discomfort than traditional braces. By following the treatment set forth by your dentist, you will have outstanding results and a smile that you will be proud to show off. It’s worth the wait!
