Everyone who has worn traditional metal braces knows that speaking with them can feel strange and take some time to get used to. Can the same be said for Invisalign clear aligners? After all, one of the main reasons you’re interested in Invisalign is to avoid having people around you notice your orthodontic treatment. So, if your speech is noticeably altered, it defeats the purpose. Read on to learn how this treatment affects the way you talk as well as some tips for getting used to speaking with Invisalign.
How Invisalign Affects Speech
The clear plastic trays that Invisalign uses to straighten your teeth are much more subtle than braces. Plus, their thinness makes them less obstructive and less likely to significantly impact the way you speak. That being said, you might experience a couple of changes during your treatment:
- A minor lisp – When you first start wearing the aligners, you might find yourself lisping when trying to pronounce words with “s,” “sh,” or “z” sounds. These sounds are produced by pressing your tongue against the back of your upper front teeth. Because the aligners now occupy this space, your tongue gets confused. Luckily, this lisp is usually so minor that it’s practically unnoticeable to anyone else.
- A slightly different style of speaking – Once you begin Invisalign treatment, you might initially slur your words and talk more slowly. Some patients find that it takes more effort to enunciate clearly and speak quickly. That’s because your mouth isn’t used to having the aligners take up space.
Tips for Getting Used to Talking with Invisalign
The easiest way to adjust to speaking with Invisalign is the same as overcoming any other speech impediment – practice! You’ll be pleased to know that alterations in the way you talk typically subside within a few days of starting Invisalign treatment.
You may be tempted to avoid talking during this period so as not to draw attention to yourself. However, the more frequently you speak, the sooner you can power through the issue. Reading a book aloud or practicing with friends or family members in a judgment-free zone are great ways to help you adapt. In particular, try pronouncing words with the sounds that you’re having trouble making.
How Long Does the Invisalign Adjustment Process Take?
If talking with Invisalign is difficult for you at first, know that you’re not alone – most patients go through the exact same thing! Again, you’ll most likely correct these issues within just a few days. However, if you’re still having trouble after several weeks (even with practice), let your dentist know. It could indicate a problem with your aligners that needs to be fixed.
While Invisalign can change the way you talk, it shouldn’t last for very long at all. As long as you follow the tips listed above – and your dentist’s guidelines – you’ll have a dazzlingly straight smile before you know it!
