Is It Possible for My Invisalign Aligners to Not Fit Right?

Are you the proud new owner of a set of Invisalign aligners? Congratulations! You’re on your way to a beautifully straight smile, and you’ll have the pleasure of taking the most convenient road to get there. But as a new Invisalign patient, maybe you have a question or two – like whether it’s possible that your custom trays don’t fit.

You’re not crazy. There are multiple reasons this could be the case, and if you want to be “in the know,” keep reading!

What Should Invisalign Feel Like?

It can be hard to tell whether something’s not right with an oral device when you don’t know what it’s supposed to feel like in the first place. Ideally, your Invisalign aligners should have a tight, snug fit – especially when it comes to your very first set. It’s more common for upgraded, next-phase sets to have small gaps around your teeth, because they’re trying to nudge your teeth in a specific direction.

However, your aligners shouldn’t be popping off your teeth or feel overly spacious, and they most definitely shouldn’t sit on any one pearly white awkwardly or crookedly!

Why Aren’t My Trays Fitting?

When your custom trays don’t fit, it may not be because they were crafted to the wrong measurements. Instead, it’s possible that:

  • Your new set simply needs to be massaged or bitten down into place. Invisalign chewies are a great tool for helping with this!
  • You’re not wearing your trays as instructed. If you don’t wear Invisalign for 22 hours per day, then your teeth won’t shift to “grow into” your strategically designed trays.
  • Your aligners are damaged. Chips, cracks, warping, and breakage will definitely affect the size and shape of your Invisalign!

Most of the time, it takes an accident to seriously mess with the fit of Invisalign – and that includes cases of operator error!

What Should I Do About It?

If Invisalign chewies or sticking to a 22-hour wear time routine don’t help, you should make an appointment with your dentist. It’s possible that your trays need a professional adjustment, replaced, or that your treatment schedule needs to be tweaked. Whatever the underlying issue is, your dentist will be able to help you identify the problem and solve it so that you can get back on track with your smile-straightening journey!
