Have Bleeding Gums?
We Can Help!

Man and woman sharing healthy smiles after periodontal therapy

At first glance, bleeding, red, and swollen gums may not seem like a significant problem. However, these symptoms are a sure sign that something is wrong. After all, a healthy smile needs more than just white, cavity-free teeth. Your gums are responsible for holding your teeth in place and stabilizing them for chewing your food. Basically, when your gums are infected (i.e., you have gum disease), it can have a huge impact on your oral and even your overall health. Dr. Chawla and Dr. Endres can provide the treatment necessary to save you from tooth loss and other negative consequences of this serious condition. Scaling and Root Planing

Patient receiving scaling and root planing

When caught early enough, gum disease can usually be reversed with a simple professional cleaning and daily brushing and flossing. However, more advanced cases can require more thorough treatment. Our dentists can perform scaling or clean under the gumline to clear out pockets of trapped bacteria and plaque. Then, we make the rough root surfaces nice and smooth in a process called root planing, which helps the gums reattach better and prevents future reinfection.

Antibiotic Therapy

Although scaling and root planing are effective when trying to get rid of the cause of gum disease, it can be difficult to eradicate the bacteria completely. Along with these treatments, we can use a topical antibiotic to kill what we may have missed. It can be applied within just a few minutes, but it continues to work well after the patient leaves our dental office. In general, we need to repeat these therapies every three to four months until we’re confident that the infection is well under control.
